Gozo Boat Tour — The Complete Private Guide 2026
Most visitors to Gozo see the island from the road.
They drive to the Citadel, walk to Dwejra, take the steps down to Xlendi, and look out at the sea from the clifftop. It is genuinely beautiful. However, the road shows you approximately half of what Gozo actually looks like. The other half — the gorges, the hidden bays, the sea caves, the red sand of Ramla Bay from the water, the salt pans from the open sea, the limestone stacks, and the dozens of locations that no road ever reaches — is only visible from a boat.
A Gozo private boat tour is not a sightseeing supplement to a Gozo land visit. For the guests who book it, it is the reason they came.
This guide covers every tour option, every major stop on the Gozo coastline, why a private boat gives you access that no other format can match, and how to book whether you are staying in Gozo or visiting from Malta.
Written by the team at Outdoor Explorers Malta — a family-run company that has been running private boat tours of the Gozo coastline from Ċirkewwa and Mġarr Harbour every single day since 2016.

Why a Private Boat Tour Is the Only Way to See Gozo Properly
Gozo has approximately 43 kilometres of coastline. The road network covers a fraction of it. Everything else — the sea caves, the hidden gorges, the secluded bays, the limestone arches and stacks, the beaches accessible only from the water — is invisible to anyone who does not get on a boat.
Furthermore, even the locations that are accessible by land look completely different from the sea. Ramla Bay from the water — the full arc of red sand visible simultaneously with Għar Mixta cave on one clifftop and Calypso Cave on the other — is a completely different view from anything the land approach delivers. Wied il-Għasri gorge from the inside, with the vertical limestone walls rising on both sides as the boat enters, is an experience the clifftop path above never approximates.
Why the Gaia Boat Specifically
Our Italian-built Gaia boats — 25 feet in length, 300HP Yamaha outboard, shallow draft — access locations that larger charter vessels simply cannot reach. The shallow draft means we anchor directly in sheltered bays rather than standing off in deeper water. We enter gorges like Wied il-Għasri that wider boats cannot navigate. We position in crystal-clear shallows above reefs that deeper-hulled vessels miss entirely.
The Gaia is an open boat — specifically designed for exactly this kind of coastal exploration. Comfortable for sunbathing and relaxing between stops, powerful enough to cover the full Gozo circumnavigation efficiently, and manoeuvrable enough to get close to the coastline in a way that makes the difference between seeing a cave from the outside and experiencing it from the inside.
A note about Wied il-Għasri: Entering this gorge requires an experienced skipper who knows the underwater boulders below the surface. It is not navigable by an inexperienced captain. Our skippers know this gorge precisely — the entry line, the depth, and the underwater obstructions. This is one of the clearest examples of why our local expertise makes a fundamental difference to the experience.
Why Starting from Mġarr Matters
Guests staying in Gozo can depart directly from Mġarr Harbour — no Gozo ferry crossing, no drive to Ċirkewwa, no lost time in transit. Step off the path from your accommodation, board the boat at Mġarr, and you are on the Gozo coastline within minutes.
This is a genuine practical advantage over operators who require all guests to travel to the north of Malta first. For Gozo-based guests, Mġarr departure means significantly more time on the water and significantly less time in a car or on a ferry.
For the complete Mġarr Harbour guide including restaurants and things to do before and after your tour, read here.
Gozo Boat Tour Options — What Is Available
Every tour we run is fully customisable. The durations below are starting points — tell us what you want to see, where you want to focus, and how long you want to be on the water, and we build the tour around that.
3-Hour Private Boat Tour — The Most Popular for Gozo Guests
Price: €289 per boat Best for: Guests staying in Gozo who want south Gozo plus the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon
The most popular tour booked by guests staying in Gozo. The skipper starts with the south Gozo highlights — Mġarr ix-Xini, Ħondoq Bay, the surrounding coves — before heading across to Comino for the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon.
For guests who want to focus entirely on Gozo without crossing to Comino, this tour can be adapted to cover more of the south and southeast Gozo coast instead.
4-Hour Private Boat Tour — South Gozo in Full
Price: €369 per boat Best for: Guests who want the complete south Gozo coastline — Mġarr ix-Xini, Ħalfa Rock, Żrieżaq, Crow Rock, Ta’ Ċenċ, Qala Point — plus a Blue Lagoon visit
The 4-hour gives the south Gozo coastline the time it deserves. Every major south coast location covered properly — with real swimming time at each stop rather than a brief pass.
6-Hour Private Boat Tour — South Gozo and Comino Complete
Price: €519 per boat Best for: A full day combining Comino (Blue Lagoon, caves, Crystal Lagoon) with the complete south Gozo circuit
The 6-hour covers everything in the 4-hour tour and adds the full Comino circuit — Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon, all sea caves, and Cominotto island. The natural clay mud stop at Ħalfa Rock is included. A genuinely complete day for guests who want both islands.
For the complete 6-hour tour guide, read here.
8-Hour Private Boat Tour — The Complete Gozo Circumnavigation
Price: Contact us Best for: The complete Gozo coastline — south AND north — plus Comino
The only tour that covers the entire Gozo coastline in a single day. South Gozo in the morning, north Gozo in the afternoon, Comino in between. Everything — Mġarr ix-Xini, Ħalfa Rock, Ta’ Ċenċ, San Blas Bay, Dahlet Qorrot, Wied il-Għasri gorge, Reqqa Point, Xwejni salt pans, Ramla Bay, Marsalforn lunch stop, and the Blue Lagoon.
For the complete 8-hour tour guide, read here.
2-Hour Jet Ski Safari — Gozo at Speed
For the most adventurous approach to the Gozo coastline — the Malta Jet Ski Rental 2-hour safari covers the south Gozo coast and the Comino channel at full speed. No licence required. The view of the limestone cliffs and sea caves at water level from a jet ski is completely different from any boat experience. For guests who want adrenaline alongside the scenery, this is the option.
The Complete Gozo Coastline — Every Stop Explained
South and Southeast Gozo
Mġarr Harbour — The Starting Point
From the water, Mġarr Harbour reveals its full character — Fort Chambray on the headland above, the Lourdes Chapel Gothic spire rising from the hill, colourful luzzus in the marina below. The harbour has been the main sea gateway to Gozo since 1241. For the complete Mġarr Harbour guide, read here.
Mġarr ix-Xini — The Most Beautiful Bay in Gozo
The extraordinary fjord-like inlet on Gozo’s south coast. CNN top 10. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt filmed By the Sea here in 2015. The 1661 watchtower by Grand Master de Redin still stands on the clifftop above the entrance.
Anchored inside this inlet — limestone walls on both sides, the water an extraordinary deep blue, complete silence — is one of the most genuinely peaceful moments available anywhere in the Maltese islands. Sea caves hidden within the cliffs are accessible by the Gaia boat’s shallow draft. The snorkelling inside the caves and along the rocky walls is outstanding.
Ħondoq Bay — Comino Views and Cliff Diving
Ħondoq Bay on the southeast coast has outstanding snorkelling, cliff diving at multiple heights, and extraordinary views directly across to Comino and the Blue Lagoon. On a clear day, the turquoise of the Blue Lagoon is visible on the horizon from the boat anchored offshore. For the complete Ħondoq Bay guide, read here.
Ħalfa Rock — The Natural Clay Mud
A natural clay hill embedded with calcite crystals sits directly at the shoreline at Ħalfa Rock. Guests apply the fine natural clay to their skin, let it dry briefly in the Maltese sun, then swim in the sea to rinse it off completely — leaving the skin smooth and clean. The calcite crystals in the clay glitter when the direct sun hits them. One of the most genuinely unique experiences on the entire Gozo coastline — and something almost no tourist ever finds without a private boat.
The snorkelling at Ħalfa Rock is excellent. For the complete Ħalfa Rock guide, read here.
Żrieżaq Beach and Crow Rock
The secluded cove adjacent to Ħalfa Rock with small salt pans carved into the shoreline rock. Crow Rock — Ġebla taċ-Ċawl — sits offshore in some of the clearest blue water in the Maltese islands, a small cave at its base. Completely accessible only by boat.
Ta’ Ċenċ and Sanap Cliffs
The most dramatic cliffs on the south Gozo coast. From the boat at golden hour, the limestone drops away to deep Mediterranean blue below and the light turns amber on the cliff face above. One of the most romantic and visually extraordinary stretches of the entire Gozo coastline. Couples have proposed here. Photographers plan entire Malta trips around this specific moment.
Qala Point — The Easternmost Tip
Ras il-Qala — the easternmost point of Gozo. Some of the clearest and most vivid blue water on the island. A small secluded inlet with a cave. Completely private. Completely extraordinary.
North Gozo — The Locations Most Visitors Never Reach
San Blas Bay — The Finest Hidden Beach in Gozo
This is the stop that makes guests go quiet.
San Blas Bay has reddish-orange sand surrounded by lush terraced hillsides — genuinely one of the most beautiful small beaches in the Mediterranean. The land access is steep and challenging enough that the beach remains peaceful even in peak summer. However, from the boat, the approach is effortless — the skipper anchors just offshore in approximately three feet of water, and guests can step directly into the shallows and walk to the beach.
Steven’s kiosk on the beach serves some of the freshest fried calamari in the Maltese islands with a cold beer. The simplest and most memorable combination. It is the kind of place that makes guests understand why this is the beach that Gozitans call their favourite.
Dahlet Qorrot — The Boathouse Bay
Colourful fishermen’s boathouses carved directly into the limestone cliff faces on both sides of the bay. One of the most photogenic coastal locations in Gozo. The bay has a jetty for direct boat docking. The atmosphere is genuinely local — some of these boathouses have been in the same family for generations. For the complete guide, read here.
Wied il-Għasri — The Gorge That Takes Your Breath Away
On calm days, our Gaia boat enters Wied il-Għasri gorge directly — navigating through the narrow entrance where the vertical limestone walls rise on both sides. The light concentrates at the gorge entrance. The water below turns a vivid undisturbed blue. The scale of the space — and the silence inside — is completely unlike anything available on the land approach from above.
Cliff diving is available from both sides of the gorge. The combination of the drama of the space and the extraordinary clear water makes Wied il-Għasri consistently one of the most memorable stops of the entire day.
Important: This gorge requires an experienced skipper who knows the underwater boulders precisely. It is not navigable without specific local knowledge. Our skippers know the entry line, the depth, and every underwater obstruction. This is one of the clearest examples of why the quality of the skipper matters on a Gozo boat tour.
Reqqa Point — The Finest Dive Site on the North Coast
Vertical drop-offs, submerged chimneys, huge boulders, grouper, barracuda, and Scyllaridae slipper lobster. The finest dive and free-dive location on the entire Gozo coastline. On calm days, the Gaia anchors nearby for free diving directly from the boat.
The bronze sculpture Wieħed by artist Austin Camilleri sits at water level here. The same coastal defence network that produced the Red Tower at Mellieħa included a sentinel station at Reqqa Point in 1622. For the complete Reqqa Point and Xwejni guide, read here.
Xwejni Bay and the Salt Pans
The ancient salt pans carved into the limestone cliff edge — 3 kilometres of them, still actively worked by Gozitan families from Żebbuġ village after 350 years. From the boat, the geometric pattern of the pans is one of the most distinctive views on the entire north Gozo coast.
The Xwejni nursery reef at approximately 1 metre depth — accessible only on completely calm days — is one of the most extraordinary shallow snorkelling experiences in the Maltese islands. The deep reef at 8 metres below is consistently rich in marine life. Furthermore, this is one of the very few places in the Mediterranean where you can see both sunrise and sunset over the sea from the same spot.
The Santa Maria Battery (1715–1716) stands above with four original cannons still in place. For the complete Xwejni Bay guide, read here.
Marsalforn Bay — The Lunch Stop
Gozo’s most popular seaside resort — a genuine fishing village that became a holiday destination without losing its soul. The ideal lunch stop on longer tours. Excellent seafood restaurants and bars along the waterfront. The Għar Qawqla sea stack just offshore is a popular swim and cliff-jump stop.
Ramla Bay — The Best Beach in Gozo
From the sea, the approach to Ramla Bay from the north coast is extraordinary. The full arc of red-golden sand becomes visible simultaneously — Għar Mixta cave on one clifftop, Calypso Cave (traditionally the cave where Homer’s nymph kept Odysseus) on the other. The scale and the colour are genuinely breathtaking from a boat anchored offshore.
Every guest who sees Ramla Bay from the sea for the first time says the same thing — that the photographs do not capture it. The red sand, the green terraced hillsides rising above, the two cave openings on the cliffs on each side, and the vivid blue water in the foreground is one of the finest coastal compositions in the Mediterranean.
Loggerhead sea turtles have nested at Ramla every year from 2020 to 2025. The Tal-Gawwi snorkelling area on the east side — a local name on no tourist map — is one of the finest snorkelling stops on the north Gozo coast. For the complete Ramla Bay guide, read here.
Can You Do a Gozo-Only Private Boat Tour?
Yes — absolutely. Every tour we run is fully customisable. If you are staying in Gozo and want to spend your day exploring the Gozo coastline without crossing to Comino and the Blue Lagoon, your skipper builds the itinerary entirely around Gozo.
A Gozo-only 6-hour tour might cover the complete south coast in the morning — Mġarr ix-Xini, Ħalfa Rock, Żrieżaq, Ta’ Ċenċ — and the complete north coast in the afternoon — San Blas, Wied il-Għasri, Xwejni, Ramla Bay — with a lunch stop at Marsalforn in between.
Simply tell us at the time of booking what you want to focus on and we build the day around it. Contact us here to discuss your ideal Gozo itinerary.
Gozo Boat Tour vs Group Boat Tour — The Honest Comparison
There are group boat tours of Gozo available from various operators in Malta. They typically depart from Buġibba or Sliema on large catamarans carrying 50 to 200 passengers, cover a fixed route at a fixed pace, and include a stop on Gozo with time in Victoria.

The Snorkelling on a Gozo Boat Tour

free dive crystal waters
The Gozo coastline is one of the finest snorkelling environments in the entire Mediterranean. The combination of clear water, rich rocky reef systems, and the variety of locations on a private boat tour produces an extraordinary range of marine encounters throughout the day.
What you will see:
- Octopus — on rocky reef sections throughout. Look for circular shapes with slightly different texture from surrounding rock
- Moray eel — in crevices at Reqqa Point and throughout the north coast reefs
- Parrot fish — vivid and present in significant numbers at the north coast locations
- Wrasse — bold and curious, approaches snorkellers readily at every rocky stop
- Cuttlefish — spectacular in spring (March to May), changing colour in real time
- Grouper and dentex — at Reqqa Point and the deeper south coast reefs
- Sea bream and sargo — in large shoals at every rocky coastal section

Best Time for a Gozo Private Boat Tour
May to June — warm water, significantly fewer crowds, cuttlefish still active from spring. The north Gozo coastline in late May is at its most dramatic — the countryside still green above the limestone cliffs.
September to October — the sweet spot. Water still warm at 24–27°C. Summer crowds gone. Marine life at its richest. The September light on the Gozo limestone is extraordinary.
July to August — warmest water. Go early — depart at 09:00 to avoid the peak sun and reach the best positions before other boats.
Year-round — private Gozo boat tours operate all year, weather permitting. The Gozo coastline in winter on a calm day is genuinely extraordinary — the colours more dramatic, the water clearer, the coastline entirely to yourselves.
Best departure time: 09:00 to 09:30 — gives you the Blue Lagoon before the ferry crowds if Comino is included, and the north Gozo stops in the finest afternoon light.
Wind: West wind affects the Comino channel and the northwest Gozo coast most significantly. South wind is best for entering Wied il-Għasri gorge. Your skipper always assesses conditions before departure and adapts the route accordingly.
