Where to snorkel in Malta Gozo and Comino

blog

snorkel gozo

Gozo and Comino are renowned for their top-notch locations and snorkeling/diving opportunities. With varying depths, an array of aquatic life, and spotless waters – the perfect underwater getaway awaits! Head north of Comino and you will discover nurseries of small fish. But if you’re after bigger species and octopuses, be sure to venture further into more inaccessible places.

What equipment will you require for snorkel or free diving?

Snorkel Mask– make sure you try a few ones and buy the one that fits best. I will suggest a high profile for a starter mask. A soft silicone skirt that seals around your face. Darker shirts tend to give you less sun reflection.

*(free divers with a bit of experience shallow profile is better for equalizing)

Snorkel Pipe

I suggest a simple straight forward snorkel with not too many gadgets, fewer things that can malfunction.

The brighter the snorkel, the easier is for boats to spot you

Also, another thing I might suggest if you travel much, use one that can easily bend, this way its easier for packing.

Make sure you try a few to find the best fit for the mouth piece.

Fins

long fins, free dive

There are short, medium, and long fins, they also have different rigidness

The shorter they are, the easier it is to turn around boulders and do sudden maneuvers

The longer the fins the more power they give you, so the faster you go

Rigidness falls down to preferences, me personally I like medium soft in rigidness

For snorkelers, I will suggest soft fins with medium length

For Free divers, I will suggest soft fins with long length

Try the foot pocket, needs to be snug but not that it hurts, and remember long fins need a sock or boots to go with it, so they need to be a size bigger.

Malta Fish and Habitats

blog

Unlike tropical waters, most of the fish in Malta hasn’t got bright colors. Most of them are camouflaged with their habitat and some of them even have shapes of seaweed, or rocks make in it hard to spot but once you spot one you realize that you are actually surrounded by different fish.

The octopus mastered all different ways how to be unnoticed, from changing her body shape, and skin color, burry herself under pebbles, or finding a hole that she will call her nest. Octopuses are the hardest to spot but the most fun to interact with, they are intelligent creatures with a curios side

Remember the Ocean rules do not touch anything, just witness the beauty around you.

  • While snorkeling always take a quick look around you every few minutes to keep a sense of awareness of where you are and if there are any waters crafts in your vicinity
  • Do pick plastic or other harmful material you encounter. ( we are lucky and our seas are quite clean so let’s keep them this way )
  • Always snorkel / free dive with a buddy.
  • Respect mother nature and the ocean, and do not push your limits.
