Stay on board until the final stop — “Għajn Tuffieħa Bus Terminus.” This is the stop for Golden Bay. The name is counter-intuitive — it says Għajn Tuffieħa but it serves Golden Bay. However, this is correct. Every local knows it. Most tourists do not.

Bus routes:

• From Valletta: Take route 42 or 250 to St Paul’s Bay, then connect to route 223 or 225. Total journey approximately 1 hour 15 minutes
• From Sliema and St Julian’s: Direct route 225 takes approximately 1 hour
• From Buġibba, Qawra, St Paul’s Bay: Routes 223 and 225 pass through the main street of St Paul’s Bay — approximately 20 minutes from there

Both fill quickly in summer — by 10:00 on peak weekends. However, continuing north along the road reveals a large overflow parking area — approximately a 5-minute walk from the beach. Furthermore, additional parking is available along the main approach road.

Parking is free. However, a parking attendant may direct you in the overflow area and will expect a small tip (€1 to €2).

Għajn Tuffieħa — The Finer Alternative

Directly over the northern headland from Golden Bay — separated by the clifftop on which the Lippija Tower stands — is Għajn Tuffieħa, also known as Riviera Beach.

Għajn Tuffieħa is in many ways the finer beach — slightly more secluded, slightly more dramatic, and significantly less developed than Golden Bay. However, it requires descending approximately 200 steps to reach the shore. Consequently, it attracts fewer visitors than Golden Bay and rewards the effort with a more atmospheric, less crowded experience.

The sand at Għajn Tuffieħa is a similar red-golden colour to Golden Bay. The surrounding cliffs are arguably more dramatic. No — Golden Bay is known for treacherous undercurrents during rough weather in winter. The west-facing bay is exposed to the dominant westerly swells. Lifeguards only operate from 15 June to 15 September. Do not swim at Golden Bay during or after winter storms under any circumstances.
