1. Why is a Comino sunset boat tour so special?
Comino is at its most relaxed in the late afternoon and evening. The harshest sun has gone, day-trip traffic usually begins to thin out and the cliffs turn warmer in colour. It is not guaranteed to be empty, but it is a completely different feel from the busiest midday hours.
The Blue Lagoon is famous for good reason, but its middle-of-the-day experience can be intense: hot rocks, many boats, people moving in every direction and a timetable built around mass departures. A sunset boat trip changes the rhythm. You have time to swim first, then slow down as the light softens and the sea becomes the main part of the experience rather than a race between crowded stops.
My honest advice as a skipper: choose sunset if you care more about atmosphere, swimming, photos and the feeling of having a real private boat day. Choose an early morning trip if you want the bluest possible water before the crowds arrive. Both are excellent; the middle of the day is the time we try hardest to avoid.
2. Where does a private Comino sunset boat tour depart from?
Outdoor Explorers sunset trips normally depart from Ċirkewwa in north Malta or Mġarr Harbour in Gozo. Both are close to Comino, which means you spend your evening on the water around the islands rather than using most of the charter travelling from central Malta.
Ċirkewwa, Malta
Best for Mellieħa, St Paul’s Bay, Bugibba, Qawra and guests happy to travel north from Sliema, St Julian’s or Valletta. We normally meet behind Ċirkewwa Café, opposite the Gozo Channel terminal. Comino is around ten minutes away by fast boat.
Mġarr Harbour, Gozo
Best for guests already staying in Gozo. Mġarr gives an easy start for a Comino circuit and, when conditions suit, a sunset finish toward Gozo’s southern cliffs. We confirm the exact public pontoon and arrival time with your booking.
Please arrive around 30 minutes before the booked departure. If sea conditions require a different safe pontoon, we tell you clearly in advance. If you are visiting from a cruise ship, tell us your ship times before booking so we can recommend a route with a comfortable return margin.
3. When do the crowds leave the Blue Lagoon and Comino?
There is no single guaranteed departure time for every ferry or shared tour. In summer, most day-trip traffic starts returning later in the afternoon, so the evening is usually quieter. Cruise-ship days, weekends, wind and seasonal daylight can all change exactly how busy Comino still feels.
That is why we do not sell a false promise that Comino is always empty at 4:00 PM. What we can promise is a private route chosen around the actual day. We watch the traffic, speak to other skippers and move toward the water that is looking best, instead of keeping you at one busy point because a brochure said so.
| What changes? | Middle of the day | Late afternoon and sunset |
|---|---|---|
| Crowd pressure | Usually at its highest in peak season. | Often reduces as day visitors begin returning. |
| Light | Strong overhead sun and bright turquoise water. | Warmer cliffs, softer portraits and golden reflections. |
| Temperature | Hotter deck and rocks, especially July and August. | More comfortable for cruising, relaxing and children. |
| Private experience | More boat movement and more fixed-tour traffic. | More chance to follow a quiet route, subject to conditions. |
4. How long should your Comino sunset boat tour be?
For a simple sunset cruise, 1.5 hours is enough. For swimming, caves and a proper Comino circuit before sunset, choose three hours. Four hours gives you more time to stay where the water is best or add a wider Gozo or Malta coastal direction when conditions allow.
1.5 hours: a beautiful evening cruise
This is ideal for couples, seniors, non-swimmers or anyone who mainly wants the sea breeze, views, music and sunset. We normally begin around 90 minutes before sunset, choose the best sheltered direction and make the experience feel calm rather than rushed.
3 hours: the proper Comino sunset experience
Three hours gives us time for a swim around Blue Lagoon or Crystal Lagoon, selected sea caves, Cominotto or another quiet stop, then the sunset finish. It is the best balance for most couples, families and groups who want both activities and atmosphere.
4 hours: more freedom, less rushing
Four hours works especially well for confident swimmers, snorkellers, friend groups and guests who do not want to watch the clock. We can spend longer where conditions are best, include more of Comino or add another skipper-approved coastal direction before returning in the evening light.
Tell Sam your dates, group size, swimming confidence and ideal evening. We will recommend the right duration honestly rather than sell you time you do not need.
5. Where is the best place to watch sunset by boat around Comino?
There is no honest single “best” sunset pin for every day. The right finishing spot changes with wind direction, swell, the month, cloud cover, traffic and where the sun is setting. A good skipper chooses the best protected, most photogenic option on the actual evening.
Our evening routes often begin around the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon while there is light for swimming, then move toward the coast that has the best sunset angle and shelter. Depending on conditions, that may mean Cominotto, the Malta side around Paradise Bay and Ċirkewwa, or a Gozo-facing finish toward Ta’ Ċenċ and Sannap.
“The best sunset tour is not a race to one Instagram location. It is arriving in the right place at the right time, with the sea comfortable and the whole group relaxed enough to enjoy it.” — Sam, Outdoor Explorers Malta
6. Can you swim, snorkel and visit caves on a sunset trip?
Yes—summer sea temperatures usually stay comfortable into the evening, and a private sunset charter can include swimming, snorkelling and caves. We do the active water stops before the light drops too low, then leave the final part of the trip for cruising, music, photos and the sunset itself.
Blue Lagoon and Cominotto
The famous pale-blue water still looks beautiful in the afternoon. We can anchor where it is safe and suitable, then you can swim from the boat, use a noodle, snorkel the reef or head toward Cominotto if your swimming confidence and current conditions make that sensible.
Crystal Lagoon and sea caves
Crystal Lagoon, Lovers Cave, Popeye Cave and other Comino caves can be excellent late in the day, but cave access is never automatic. Your skipper checks swell, light, boat traffic and each guest’s ability first. We choose the caves that make sense rather than force a risky stop for a photo.
Cliff jumping and photography
Only jump when your skipper confirms the location, water depth, weather and timing are appropriate. For photos, the best moment is normally before the sun reaches the horizon: you still have warm light on faces and cliffs, with enough visibility to move safely around the boat.
7. Do you need a Blue Lagoon landing pass for a sunset boat tour?
You need the free timed QR landing pass only if you step ashore and remain within the regulated Blue Lagoon area. You do not need a landing pass simply to arrive by private boat, anchor nearby or swim directly from the boat. The pass is separate from your boat booking.
For many sunset guests, staying on the boat is actually the better experience: no jetty waiting, no time spent walking through crowds and more time for swimming in quiet water. If going ashore matters to you, book the pass early, save the QR code on your phone and make sure your landing slot works with the charter timing.
Read our practical Blue Lagoon pass guide, then check the latest landing information directly on the official Blue Lagoon FAQ.
8. Is a Comino sunset boat trip good for proposals, families and friends?
Yes. A sunset charter works because it can be adjusted around your group. Couples can slow the route down for a proposal, families can choose an earlier return, and friends can combine swimming with music and drinks—without being fitted into a shared boat’s schedule.
For couples and proposals
Tell us privately in the booking comments or on WhatsApp if you are planning a proposal, anniversary or honeymoon surprise. We can help choose a quieter moment, play the right song over Bluetooth, keep a bottle cold and position the boat where the evening conditions make the view feel special.
For families with children
Families often love the cooler temperature and calmer pace, especially after a hot day sightseeing. Tell us children’s approximate weights so we prepare the right life jackets. If bedtime matters, choose an earlier evening slot or a shorter 1.5-hour sunset cruise rather than returning after dark.
For friends and celebrations
Bring your own drinks and simple snacks, use the cooler or fridge onboard and connect your music to Bluetooth. We keep the day personal and relaxed; the skipper still sets the safety rules, chooses the safe swimming areas and makes sure the boat remains comfortable for everyone.
What recent guests say about our Comino trips
A sunset charter should feel personal, not like a timetable with a sunset added at the end. These are excerpts from recent Google reviews, shared in the guests’ own words.
★★★★★“The boat trip was highlight of our stay in Malta. We did 3h sunset tour and our amazing skipper/tour guide Ginger was so great. Showed us the best spots, took the best pictures, good chat and was just so much fun.”
★★★★★“We had a wonderful time! Thank you to Ginger, the captain (pilot), who made our trip incredible. He is very kind and funny, and taught and showed us so many things! We would definitely recommend it!”
★★★★★“Out of all the boat trips I’ve taken around the island, Outdoor Explorers was the one that delivered! … Seeing Comino from a new angle, with stories we’d never heard before, made it feel like we were discovering the island all over again … A core memory for my family and me, without a doubt.”
9. What is included on a private Comino sunset charter?
On direct Outdoor Explorers private bookings, your local skipper and fuel are included. You also have shade, cushioned seating, a ladder, Bluetooth, life jackets, masks and snorkels, and cold storage with ice. The exact boat layout and selected extra facilities vary, so ask if a particular feature is essential.
- Local skipper and fuel
- Shade, cushions and safe boarding ladder
- Adult and children’s life jackets
- Masks, snorkels and floatation aids
- Bluetooth and ice box or fridge
- Towel, swimwear and cream sunscreen
- Water, snacks and any preferred drinks
- A light cover-up for the return cruise
- Dry bag for phone and valuables
- Any personal medication
Please avoid glassware, high heels and large hard luggage. If you have babies, pregnancy, an injury, reduced mobility, a nervous swimmer, food allergies or a special occasion, use the booking comments or message us before the trip. That small information lets us make the route safer and far more personal.
10. Are Comino sunset boat tours calmer and safe in the evening?
Evening water can be beautifully calm, but it is never guaranteed simply because the sun is setting. Wind direction, swell, forecast changes and the group on board decide the safe route. Your skipper will choose the protected side of Comino or Malta rather than chase a planned stop in uncomfortable conditions.
This flexibility is one of the real values of a private charter. If one lagoon has too much swell, we move to the next best sheltered place. If a guest feels seasick, we adjust speed, seating and the route. If conditions are not safe for the intended trip, we discuss the sensible option: an alternative route, a different time or a reschedule.
For peace of mind, tell us in advance if someone is pregnant, cannot swim, has mobility limitations or is anxious on the water. Take any motion-sickness medicine that is suitable for you before boarding, following the product or pharmacist’s instructions—not once the boat is already moving.
Frequently asked questions about Comino sunset boat tours
The best Comino sunset trip depends on your group, weather and whether you want to swim, explore or simply watch the light change. These are the questions guests ask us most often before reserving a private evening boat charter from Malta or Gozo.
Is a private sunset boat tour just a small shared group?
No. Private means the boat is exclusively for your group, with your own skipper. You do not share the route, music, swimming stops or timetable with strangers. We tailor the experience around your group, the conditions and the time of sunset.
What time does a Comino sunset boat tour start?
The start time changes through the season because sunset changes. We normally plan a 1.5-hour cruise around 90 minutes before sunset, while a three-hour charter starts earlier so you can swim and explore before the golden-hour finish. We confirm the best exact time with your booking.
Can we still swim at the Blue Lagoon in the evening?
Yes, when conditions and daylight make it suitable. In summer the water often remains warm through the evening. We usually plan the main swim stop before the light drops, then finish with the sunset cruise. Your skipper chooses the safest and quietest available swimming area.
Do we need a Blue Lagoon landing pass on a private boat?
Only if you step ashore and remain in the regulated Blue Lagoon landing area. You do not need it to swim directly from the private boat. The QR landing pass is free, separate from transport and should be reserved early if walking on land matters to your group.
Where do we depart from?
You can normally depart from Ċirkewwa in Malta or Mġarr Harbour in Gozo. Both are close to Comino. We confirm the exact public pontoon, arrival time and any weather-related meeting-point adjustment before the charter.
Can you arrange a proposal or anniversary moment?
Yes. Tell us privately before the trip and we can help time the moment, choose a suitable quiet location, keep drinks cold and use your chosen Bluetooth music. Conditions always come first, but a private sunset charter is one of the most memorable ways to celebrate on the islands.
What is included in the price?
Direct Outdoor Explorers private-charter bookings include the skipper and fuel, plus life jackets, masks, snorkels, shade, cushions, Bluetooth and an ice box or fridge. Boat layouts vary, so ask before booking if a shower, toilet or a particular seating arrangement is essential.
What happens if weather is not suitable?
Safety comes first. We may choose a more sheltered route, adjust the time, reschedule or discuss the right alternative based on the forecast and conditions. A private tour is flexible, but we never promise a cave, swimming stop or sunset viewpoint when the sea is not safe for it.
