Blue Lagoon Malta FAQ 2026 — Every Question Answered by a Local

There are a lot of Blue Lagoon FAQ pages online. Most of them were written by people who visited once, looked things up, and typed a list of answers.

This one is different. These answers come from a team that is on the water at the Blue Lagoon every single day — running private boat tours, watching conditions change with the seasons, seeing exactly what surprises visitors, and knowing the details that no travel blog bothers to research.

If you have a question about the Blue Lagoon, it’s probably answered here. If it isn’t — contact us and we’ll add it.

What is the Blue Lagoon Malta?

✅ The Blue Lagoon is a shallow natural bay on the island of Comino — one of three Maltese islands, sitting between Malta and Gozo. It’s known for its extraordinary turquoise water, white sandy seabed, and dramatic limestone coastline. It is consistently rated one of the most beautiful swimming spots in the Mediterranean.

Is the Blue Lagoon worth visiting?

✅ Yes — but how you visit makes all the difference. The Blue Lagoon on a private boat, anchored in open water away from the shore crowds, is a genuinely unforgettable experience. The Blue Lagoon on a packed July afternoon, squeezed onto the beach with hundreds of strangers, is less so. Plan it right and it absolutely delivers.

The best way to experience it? Book a private boat tour here.

Why is the Blue Lagoon water so blue?

✅ Three things working together: exceptionally clean and clear water, a white sandy seabed that reflects light back up through the water, and direct Mediterranean sunlight at the right angle. The combination creates that vivid turquoise colour that looks almost too blue to be real. It isn’t edited in photos. It genuinely looks like that.

How deep is the Blue Lagoon?

✅ The shore area is very shallow — sometimes only 1 to 2 metres near the beach. As you move away from shore toward open water, depth increases to around 4 to 7 metres. Private boats anchor in the deeper, clearer sections away from the shore shallows.

Are Blue Lagoon and Comino the same thing?

✅ No. Comino is the island. The Blue Lagoon is one bay on that island. Comino also has the Crystal Lagoon, Santa Marija Bay, Santa Marija Caves, Cominotto islet, and several other beautiful spots. Most tourists only see the Blue Lagoon. Private boat tours show you the whole picture.

Water Temperature — Month by Month

How warm is the Blue Lagoon water?

✅ The Blue Lagoon water temperature varies significantly across the year. Here is the full breakdown for every month:

Monthly Water Temperatures

  • January:3°C / 63.1°F
  • February:4°C / 61.5°F
  • March:4°C / 61.5°F
  • April:2°C / 63.0°F
  • May:6°C / 67.3°F
  • June:5°C / 76.1°F
  • July:7°C / 80.1°F
  • August:0°C / 82.4°F — warmest month
  • September:0°C / 80.6°F
  • October:5°C / 76.1°F
  • November:2°C / 72.0°F
  • December:7°C / 65.7°F

💡 Local Tip: May, June, September and October are the sweet spot — water warm enough to swim comfortably, but far fewer crowds than peak July and August. September in particular has warm water (27°C) with a noticeably quieter atmosphere.

Tickets, Access & Booking

Do you need a ticket for the Blue Lagoon Malta in 2026?

✅ Yes — if you want to set foot on shore. Since May 2025, everyone wanting to step onto the Blue Lagoon beach area must pre-register for a free access pass. The pass is completely free but mandatory. Without it, you will be turned away at the jetty.

For the complete step-by-step guide including time slots, how to book, and who is exempt, see our Blue Lagoon Malta ticket guide 2026.

How do I get a Blue Lagoon access pass?

✅ Go to www.blcomino.com, select your date and time slot, enter your details, and you’ll receive a QR code by email instantly. Show the QR code on arrival and you’ll be issued a wristband. The whole process takes about two minutes. It is free.

What are the Blue Lagoon time slots in 2026?

✅ There are three daily time slots:

  • Morning: 08:00–13:00
  • Afternoon: 13:30–17:30
  • Evening: 17:30–22:00

Each slot gives you 4 to 5 hours of shore access. You can book multiple slots on the same day if you want to stay longer — just register separately for each one.

Can you visit the Blue Lagoon without booking a ticket?

✅ Only if you arrive on a private boat and stay on the boat. Private boat guests who swim directly from the vessel — anchored away from shore — do not need an access pass. If you want to go ashore, you need a ticket regardless of how you arrived.

Do private boat guests need a Blue Lagoon ticket?Lady climbing boat ladder at Crystal Lagoon near Blue Lagoon Malta during private boat tour with turquoise water

✅ Only if they want to go ashore. Guests on private boat tours who swim from the boat in the open lagoon do not need a pass. This is one of the key advantages of a private charter — no tickets, no queuing, no wristbands. Just the Blue Lagoon at its best.

What happens if you arrive at the Blue Lagoon without a ticket?

✅ You will be turned away at the jetty. In peak summer, same-day slots are often fully booked, so registering on the spot is not always possible. Always book in advance. It’s free and takes two minutes — there is no reason not to.

Is the Blue Lagoon ticket the same as the Blue Lagoon wristband?

✅ They are linked. The ticket is the QR code you register for online. The wristband is what you receive physically when you arrive at the entry point — it’s issued in exchange for showing your QR code. You need both: register online first, receive wristband on arrival.

For the full ticket guide, see our complete Blue Lagoon access pass guide 2026.

Wind, Currents & Conditions

Is there a current in the Blue Lagoon?

✅ Yes — particularly in the afternoon during summer. The current usually travels south, from Gozo toward Malta, though it occasionally reverses direction. Summer currents are stronger than winter. Always be aware of your position in the water relative to the boat or shore, especially if you swim further out.

💡 Local Tip: If you feel a current pulling you, don’t fight it directly. Swim at an angle across it rather than against it. Always stay within comfortable distance of your boat or a safe exit point.

Which winds affect the Blue Lagoon?

✅ The Blue Lagoon is well sheltered from most wind directions. The two winds that affect it are westerly and south-westerly winds. On those days, small waves and chop can enter the bay. In all other wind directions, the lagoon stays calm and flat — ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

💡 Local Tip: Before booking, check the wind forecast. If the forecast shows west or southwest wind above 15 knots, conditions at the Blue Lagoon may be choppy. Our skippers always check conditions daily and will advise if an alternative location would give you a better experience.

What is the best time of day to visit the Blue Lagoon?

✅ For the quietest experience: arrive between 08:00 and 09:00. The lagoon is at its most peaceful in the early morning and the water is its calmest. For the most vivid water colour: mid-morning to early afternoon when direct sunlight hits the water at the best angle. For photos on shore: be there before 09:00 — after that the beach fills quickly. For the most atmospheric visit overall: the evening slot (17:30–22:00) is the best kept secret at the Blue Lagoon. The crowds thin dramatically, the light turns golden, and it becomes a completely different place.

Timing — When to Visit & How to Avoid the Crowds

What is the best time to visit the Blue Lagoon Malta?

✅ Early morning — between 08:00 and 09:30 — is the best time. The water is glassy, the light is beautiful, the crowds haven’t arrived yet, and the Blue Lagoon looks at its most extraordinary. After 10:30 in peak season, the beach fills rapidly and stays busy until late afternoon.

What is the best time of day to avoid the crowds at the Blue Lagoon?

✅ Two windows: early morning (before 10:00) and evening (after 17:30). The morning slot catches the lagoon at its most peaceful. The evening slot — which most tourists don’t realise exists — is genuinely special. The day-trippers have gone, the light turns golden, and the Blue Lagoon becomes a completely different place.

💡 Local Tip: The evening time slot (17:30–22:00) is the best kept secret at the Blue Lagoon. Book it. The crowds are gone, the water glows orange and gold at sunset, and you’ll have space to actually breathe. Most tourists don’t even know this slot exists.

How do I avoid the crowds at the Blue Lagoon Malta?

✅ Five ways:

  • Book the early morning slot — arrive before 09:00 and you’ll see the lagoon before the ferry crowds arrive
  • Book the evening slot — 17:30 onwards is significantly quieter
  • Visit in May, June, September or October — shoulder season has far fewer people than July and August
  • Go on a weekday — weekends in summer are noticeably busier
  • Use a private boat — anchor in open water away from the shore. The crowded section is the beach area. The open lagoon has far more space

What time of year is the Blue Lagoon least crowded?blue lagoon malta crowded comino beach tourists swimming crystal clear water summer busy travel malta

✅ May, early June, September, and October. The water is still warm (20°C–27°C / 68°F–81°F), the weather is excellent, and visitor numbers are a fraction of peak July and August. October in particular is a beautiful time — warm sea, golden light, and a calm that peak season visitors never experience.

Is the Blue Lagoon Malta too crowded to enjoy?

✅ On a shared ferry tour in July at midday — yes, it can feel overwhelming. On a private boat anchored in the open lagoon, away from the shore crowds — no. The crowded version and the private boat version feel like completely different experiences. Same water, completely different day.

Is There Shade at the Blue Lagoon?

Is there shade at the Blue Lagoon Malta?

✅ There are approximately 100 umbrellas and 200 sun loungers available for rent at the Blue Lagoon. However — and this is important — they are almost always fully rented by 10:30am in peak season. If you’re arriving mid-morning or later in July and August, plan on being in full sun. Bring your own hat, sun cream, and cover-up.

On a private boat, there is shade under the canopy throughout the tour — so boat guests are covered regardless of the time of day.

💡 Local Tip: If you want a sun lounger at the Blue Lagoon in summer, you need to be there before 09:30. By 10:30 they are gone. Don’t plan your day around getting one — bring your own towel and plan for full sun exposure.

Should I bring sun cream to the Blue Lagoon?

✅ Absolutely essential. The Maltese summer sun is intense — the limestone reflects heat as well as light, and the water creates additional UV reflection. High-factor sun cream, reapplied regularly, is non-negotiable. A hat and UV-protective rash vest are also worth considering, especially for children.

Is the Blue Lagoon Suitable for Families, Toddlers & Babies?

Is the Blue Lagoon suitable for toddlers and babies?Family with kids on private boat at Crystal Lagoon Malta

✅ Honest answer: the Blue Lagoon shore area in peak summer is not ideal for babies and toddlers.

  • There is very little shade once the sun loungers are taken
  • The beach is extremely busy — passing with a pram or buggy is practically impossible
  • The entry points are rocky and uneven
  • The shallow water near shore is crowded with people

The best alternatives for young children:

  • Santa Marija Bay — a 30-minute walk from the Blue Lagoon, much calmer, shallower water, more shade
  • A private boat tour — children swim from the boat in calm open water, life jackets and floaties on board, shade under the canopy, no beach crowds, no rocky entry

💡 Local Tip: For families with babies and toddlers, a private boat is not a luxury — it’s genuinely the practical choice. The boat provides shade, safety, flexibility, and calm water. The Blue Lagoon beach in peak summer with a buggy is one of the most stressful experiences you can have in Malta.

Is the Blue Lagoon family-friendly?

✅ For older children and confident swimmers — yes, very. For babies, toddlers, and children who need shade and calm — a private boat tour is a much better option. See our guide to private boat trips for families in Malta.

Marine Life — Sharks, Dolphins, Jellyfish & Sea Urchins

Are there sharks in the Blue Lagoon Malta?

✅ No. Shark encounters at the Blue Lagoon are not a concern. The lagoon is shallow, busy with people, and not the type of environment that attracts shark activity. Various shark species exist in deeper Maltese waters well away from the islands, but the Blue Lagoon is completely safe for swimming.

Are there dolphins in the Blue Lagoon Malta?

✅ Dolphins don’t typically appear inside the Blue Lagoon itself, but they are spotted regularly in the channel between Malta and Comino — particularly on the journey from Cirkewwa to the lagoon in the early morning. On private boat tours, we spot dolphins roughly once or twice a week, usually before 09:00. It is one of those moments guests remember for years.

💡 Local Tip: For the best chance of seeing dolphins, book an early morning private boat tour. The channel between Cirkewwa and Crystal Lagoon in the early morning is where we encounter them most frequently. There are no guarantees — but the odds are good and the early morning lagoon is worth it regardless.

Are there jellyfish in the Blue Lagoon Malta?

✅ Jellyfish occasionally appear at the Blue Lagoon, typically in spring rather than peak summer. Whether they’re present on any given day depends on wind direction, sea currents, and recent weather. In July and August jellyfish are rare. In April and May they appear occasionally. Always look before you swim if you’re concerned — your skipper will advise on the day.

Are there sea urchins in the Blue Lagoon?

✅ The main Blue Lagoon swimming area has relatively few sea urchins, but they are found close to the rocks around the bay edges. Do not touch or step on them. Sea urchin spines break off inside the skin and must be carefully removed — either by a lifeguard, at a hospital, or with a sterilised needle if there are only one or two spines. The best prevention: wear water shoes if you’re walking on or near rocks, and don’t put your hands on rocky surfaces underwater without looking first.

💡 Local Tip: Water shoes are worth packing if you plan to access the Blue Lagoon from shore. The rocky entry points around the bay edge are where sea urchins are found. The sandy swim areas in the middle of the lagoon are safe.

The Hair Question

Does the Blue Lagoon Malta damage your hair?

✅ No — this is a common misconception caused by confusion with the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, which has geothermal mineral-rich water that can affect hair texture. The Blue Lagoon in Malta is normal Mediterranean seawater. It’s salty, as all sea water is, but there is nothing in the water that damages hair beyond what any other beach in Malta or Gozo would do. The high visitor numbers and strong currents actually help keep the water refreshed and clean. You can get your hair wet. It’s fine.

Facilities, Food & Pineapple Cocktails

Is there food at the Blue Lagoon?

✅ Yes — several food kiosks and vendors operate at the Blue Lagoon daily. The menu covers pizza, baguettes, burgers, wraps, kebabs, salads, and ice cream. Most options are fast food style — nothing elaborate, but perfectly good for a beach day.

Approximate prices in 2026:

  • Burger — €8
  • Wrap — €7.50
  • Hot dog — €6
  • Ice cream and snacks — from €2–€4

Prices are similar to the Maltese mainland, perhaps slightly higher — which makes sense given that all supplies are transported to Comino by small boat every day. It’s not the rip-off that some travel guides suggest, but bringing your own food and drinks is always a good idea if you want more choice or to keep costs down.

On private boat tours, a cool box with ice is included — bring whatever food and drinks you like and they’ll stay cold throughout the trip.

💡 Local Tip: The food vendors get busy between 12:00 and 14:00. If you’re hungry, eat before the lunch rush or bring your own food on the boat — you’ll save time and money.

💡 Local Tip: The food vendors at the Blue Lagoon do a steady trade all day. If you’re hungry at peak lunchtime (12:00–14:00) expect a queue. Arrive early or eat before the rush — or simply bring your own lunch on the boat.

Are there toilets at the Blue Lagoon?

✅ Yes — toilets are available at the Blue Lagoon shore area. They are basic, can be busy in peak season, and don’t always have soap and toilet paper available. Bring your own. On private boat tours, there is a toilet on board — so guests don’t need to go ashore for facilities.

What are the pineapple cocktails at the Blue Lagoon?

blog

Pineapple Blue Lagoon

✅ The pineapple cocktails are one of the Blue Lagoon’s most recognisable experiences. They are sold from vendors on shore and also from a boat that moves through the lagoon. Here’s what you need to know:

Pineapple Cocktail Prices — 2026

  • With alcohol: €10 (600ml / roughly 1 pint)
  • Virgin (no alcohol): €8
  • Refill with alcohol: €5
  • Refill without alcohol: €4
  • Flavours available: Mojito, Sex on the Beach, Cosmopolitan, Long Island Iced Tea, Piña Colada, and more
  • Served in: A real pineapple — the cocktail is poured inside the hollowed fruit

💡 Local Tip: On private boat tours, your skipper can call ahead and arrange for pineapple cocktails to be delivered to the boat at the jetty — so you get the full Blue Lagoon experience without leaving the water. One of the small details that makes a private charter genuinely special.

Visiting with Children, Families & Special Circumstances

Is the Blue Lagoon suitable for young children and babies?

✅ Honest answer: the Blue Lagoon shore area in peak summer is not ideal for babies and toddlers. There is very little shade on the beach. It gets extremely busy — passing with a buggy or pram is practically impossible. The entry points are rocky. For very young children, the Blue Lagoon beach in July and August is genuinely difficult.

Much better alternatives: Santa Marija Bay on Comino (a 30-minute walk from the Blue Lagoon, much calmer and shadier) or a private boat tour where children can swim from the boat in calm, clear water with shade on deck, life jackets and floaties on board, and no beach crowds.

For families with young children, a private boat is the right call every time. See our guide to private boat trips for families in Malta.

Can you visit the Blue Lagoon while pregnant?

✅ Yes — many pregnant guests join our private boat tours every season. The important things: tell us when you book and tell the skipper before departure. We will choose the best boat for you, seat you at the back of the boat for the most stable, comfortable ride, go at a slower pace, and choose the calmest routes and locations. Swimming from the boat in calm, shallow water is generally fine for most stages of pregnancy, but always follow your doctor’s advice. We will make the trip as comfortable as possible.

💡 Local Tip: If you’re pregnant and want to visit the Blue Lagoon, a private boat tour is significantly better than the ferry. You have control over the pace, the seating, and the conditions. Let us know when booking and we’ll take care of everything.

Is the Blue Lagoon suitable for non-swimmers?Private boat cruising Malta’s coastal sites with no swimming needed, offering relaxed sightseeing on calm blue water.

✅ Yes — on a private boat tour, non-swimmers can enjoy the entire experience from the deck. The views of the Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon, and Comino coastline from the boat are extraordinary. And for those who want to try the water, we have life jackets, pool noodles, and floaties on every boat. Many guests who arrive saying they won’t swim end up in the water.

Special Circumstances

Can you visit the Blue Lagoon Malta while pregnant?

✅ Yes — many pregnant guests join our private boat tours every season. Tell us when you book and tell your skipper before departure. We will seat you at the back of the boat for the most stable, comfortable ride, travel at a slower pace, and choose the calmest routes. Swimming in calm shallow water from the boat is generally suitable for most stages of pregnancy — but always follow your doctor’s advice first.

Is the Blue Lagoon open in winter?

blue lagoon winter malta blog

✅ Yes — the Blue Lagoon is accessible year-round. Ferry services run less frequently and tours operate weather permitting. Winter visits are genuinely beautiful — calm, quiet, and the light on the water in November and December has a warmth that summer visitors never see. Water temperature in winter ranges from 16°C–19°C (61°F–66°F) — chilly but swimmable for the brave.

Photography — The Insider Guide

Where are the best spots for Blue Lagoon photos?

✅ From a private boat, the best shots come from three positions:

  • The bow platform (dolphin platform) — sit at the front of the boat with the lagoon below you and the water lady on front of marinello boat private boat tour malta blue lagoon crystal lagoon clear water outdoor explorers maltastretching behind. This is the most iconic Gaia boat shot.
  • From the swim ladder — half in, half out of the water, looking back at the boat with the lagoon in the background
  • Central Blue Lagoon toward Cominotto — anchor in open water and shoot toward the small white-sand beach on Cominotto with the vivid turquoise in the foreground
  • Mid-jump from the bow — have someone ready to shoot the moment you leave the platform

What time is best for Blue Lagoon photography?

✅ It depends on what you’re shooting:

  • Above water / drone / wide shots: Morning (09:00–11:00) and late afternoon. Direct sunlight at a low angle gives the best depth and colour in the water
  • Underwater photography: Midday (11:00–14:00) when the sun is directly overhead. Light penetrates the water most effectively at this angle, making the underwater world glow
  • Shore photography from land: Before 09:00. After that, the beach fills with people and getting a clean shot becomes nearly impossible

💡 Local Tip: For drone photography at the Blue Lagoon, the morning slot is best. The water colour is deep and vivid in morning light, the crowds are smaller, and the aerial perspective of the lagoon with Cominotto beside it is genuinely extraordinary. Always check local drone regulations before flying.

Getting There

What is the best way to get to the Blue Lagoon?

✅ Private boat tour — every time. You depart from Cirkewwa (10 minutes from the Blue Lagoon), anchor in open water away from the shore crowds, swim directly from the boat, and experience the lagoon in its best form. No queuing, no ferry timetables, no overcrowded beach.

For all the options compared honestly, check out this guide to getting to the Blue Lagoon.

How long is the ferry from Malta to the Blue Lagoon?

✅ The ferry from Cirkewwa to the Blue Lagoon takes approximately 20–25 minutes. On a private boat, departure from Cirkewwa takes about 10 minutes to Crystal Lagoon and 15 minutes total to the Blue Lagoon.

How long do you need at the Blue Lagoon?

✅ On the ferry with a shore ticket: the time slots are 4–5 hours each. Most people find 3–4 hours on shore is plenty. On a private boat: the 2-hour tour gives you excellent swim time at the lagoon. The 3-hour tour covers the full Comino circuit. The sweet spot for most groups is 2–3 hours of actual time at the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon combined.

Is 2 hours at the Blue Lagoon enough?

✅ On a private boat, yes — 2 hours gives you proper swim time at the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon, snorkelling, photos, and a relaxed experience. On shore via the ferry, 2 hours is tight — you’d want at least 3–4 hours to feel like you’ve had a proper visit.

Blue Lagoon Alternatives — Just as Beautiful, Far Fewer People

What are the best Blue Lagoon alternatives on Comino?

The access pass only covers the main Blue Lagoon shore area. These spots need no pass and are often better:

  • Cominotto — the tiny island directly across from the Blue Lagoon. Accessible only by private boat. White sand, vivid water, extraordinary snorkelling. A fraction of the people.
  • Crystal Lagoon — deeper and more vivid than the Blue Lagoon. No access pass required. Excellent snorkelling around Popeye Cave.
  • Santa Marija Bay — secluded white-sand beach. No access pass. Shallow, calm, perfect for families and non-swimmers.
