Blue Lagoon Malta Beach: Why It Gets So Crowded (And How to Avoid It)

Blue Lagoon in Comino is one of the most beautiful places in Malta.

Crystal clear turquoise water.
White sandy seabed.
Shallow areas that glow under the summer sun.

It looks tropical.

But if you are planning to visit, there is something important to understand:

Blue Lagoon Malta beach is small.

Very small.

And in the middle of summer, it welcomes thousands of visitors every single day.

Let us break it down properly so you know what to expect — and how to experience it the right way.

How Big Is Blue Lagoon Beach Really?

This is something most websites do not explain clearly.

The main sandy beach area at Blue Lagoon is under 10 metres deep in most parts.

That narrow strip of sand must accommodate large daily numbers during peak season — sometimes close to 12,000 visitors across the entire lagoon area.

When you compare the beach size to the number of visitors, it becomes obvious why it feels packed.

And it is not just the sand.

All the surrounding rocky coastline fills up quickly as well. People sit on sharp limestone rocks, searching for any available flat surface. Shade is limited.

Yes, there are umbrellas and deck chairs available for rent.

But there are only around 100 umbrellas for a very large daily influx of people. These usually get taken quickly, especially between 10:30 AM and noon.

Even when you secure an umbrella, the setup is tightly arranged. Deck chairs are placed close together. Towels overlap. Personal space is minimal.

The beach feels compressed.

There Is Plenty of Blue Water — But Not Much Sand

Here is the part many visitors do not realise.Blue Lagoon in Comino with crystal blue water and no people, photographed early morning before boats and crowds arrive.

The official Blue Lagoon swimming zone covers approximately 29,000 square metres.

The total open blue water area surrounding Blue Lagoon is around 125,000 square metres.

So there is plenty of water.

What there is not much of, is beach, just around 50 square metres..

That is why the shoreline feels overcrowded, while the open water can still feel spacious — depending on how you access it.

If you arrive by ferry, you are directed toward the beach area.

If you arrive by private boat, you use the water.

You swim directly from the boat into the clearest section of the lagoon, away from the tight beach zones.

That difference changes the entire experience.

Why Does Blue Lagoon Get So Crowded?

Blue Lagoon is:Blue Lagoon in Malta with crystal blue water and calm sea conditions around Comino, ideal for swimming and relaxing by boat.

• Easy to reach by ferry
• Extremely popular on social media
• One of Malta’s most famous swimming spots
• Relatively small in shoreline size

High beauty and easy access mean high demand.

Most ferries arrive between late morning and early afternoon. When multiple boats dock within a short window, the beach fills quickly.

It is not that Blue Lagoon is overrated.

It is simply heavily visited.

What About the Beach on Cominotto?

On the western side of Blue Lagoon, on Cominotto island, there is another small sandy beach.

comino blue lagoon

From a distance, it appears quieter and less crowded than the main Blue Lagoon shoreline.

And often, it is.

However, reaching it from the main Blue Lagoon side requires swimming roughly 150 metres across open water.

This stretch of water is known to have occasional underwater currents, especially when boat traffic increases or wind direction shifts.

It is very important not to attempt the crossing unless:

• You are a strong swimmer
• Sea conditions are calm
• Lifeguard flags are green

Blue Lagoon is generally safe, but currents between Comino and Cominotto can develop, particularly during busy summer hours.

For many visitors, that swim can feel longer and more exposed than expected.

A safer and much easier way to access the Cominotto side is by private boat.

Our private boat tours anchor a short distance away from the Cominotto beach area, making it simple to swim over in calm, clear water without needing to cross the full stretch from the busy main zone.

Important Things to Know Before You Go

1. Land Access Requires Advance Booking

Access to the land area of Blue Lagoon now requires advance booking through the official system:

If you plan to step onto the beach area, you must secure your time slot in advance during peak season.

Visitors arriving without booking may not be permitted access to the land zone.

This does not apply in the same way when swimming from a private boat offshore, but it is important to plan properly.

2. What You Should BringHappy lady wearing a captain hat on a private boat at the Blue Lagoon in Comino, Malta, surrounded by calm crystal blue water.

Final Thoughts

Blue Lagoon Malta beach is small.

The lagoon itself is large.

Most of the crowd pressure happens on the sand — not in the open water.

If your plan is to spend the entire day on the beach in peak August, you should expect tight space.

If you approach Blue Lagoon from the sea, anchor in clear open water, and avoid the midday ferry rush, the experience changes completely.

Blue Lagoon is not just a beach.

It is a lagoon.

And the way you visit it makes all the difference.
